Our main social event is a monthly luncheon at a country club or restaurant. Luncheons are enlivened by raffles, fashion and jewelry shows, and stimulating speakers on topics such as adult literacy, mental health, breast cancer research, local opera and theatre companies, and other topics of interest to women.

The Gentleman’s Farm: Elegant Country House Living
Since classical times, the ideal of a gentleman’s farm as a place of pleasure and retreat has inspired the creation of extraordinary homes on landscapes of unparalleled beauty. In Virginia, these ideals were translated to the New World by such icons as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who drew on classical examples while updating them with the democratic ideals and virtues of the new country they helped to create. For the past four centuries, such estates have served to influence the style of residential buildings across the country and continue to inspire generations of farmers who seek to live well on the land.
Debra McClane, co-author of The Gentleman’s Farm: Elegant Country House Living, will present a lively discussion on the historical precedents for these estates and will show us how these ideals are still reflected on farms across the Commonwealth. Her lecture will highlight some of the 23 Virginia farms featured in the book, and will be illustrated, in part, with photographs not seen in the book. From the Eastern Shore, to Central Virginia, to the Northern Piedmont, Debra will discuss the farms, vineyards, gardens, and fine country houses that still make Virginia’s farms the envy of many.
