"Scarlett O’Hara:  Still Feisty After All These Years"

Scarlett O'Hara has been dubbed "the best woman character in American literature".  More than 80 years after this groundbreaking heroine appeared, our March speaker, author and Gone With the Wind expert John Wiley, Jr. will explore author Margaret Mitchell's complicated relationship with her creation as well as Scarlett's continuing adventures in various sequels, prequels and parodies.

Mr. Wiley first saw the motion picture Gone With the Wind when he was just 10.  He then read the novel by Margaret Mitchell and soon began collecting GWTW memorabilia.  In the almost 50 years since, he has amassed one of the world's largest collections related to the book and the movie.

A noted authority on the subject, he has been interviewed by NPR, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, London Times, and CBS This Morning.  John is the author or editor of two books--Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind:  A Bestseller's Odyssey from Atlanta to Hollywood, and The Scarlett Letters:  The Making of the Film Gone With the Wind, a collection of Mitchell's letters about the movie. John has published a quarterly newsletter for Gone With the Wind fans called The Scarlett Letter for almost 25 years.

John Wiley grew up in Lynchburg, is a graduate of Virginia Tech, and has lived in Richmond for almost 30 years.  Please join us as we welcome this noted expert to our March luncheon.
